Also known as abbey formats, random lengths originated in the large French limestone regions. The width remains constant while the lengths naturally vary from one slab to another.

OPUS IV: MULTIFORMAT

The charm of old terraces


Opus patterns combine several tile formats in the same layout, the most common being Opus IV, which consists of four formats. Generally made from aged stone, they create more pronounced and irregular joints that give the patio a lot of character.

A choice reserved for projects that embrace a traditional, country, or Mediterranean style.

The grandeur of wide-open spaces

The 60 × 60 cm is now the classic for natural stone patios. It offers an excellent balance between aesthetics, ease of installation, and showcasing the stone's beauty.

Very large formats, such as 100 × 100 cm, take this even further. Rarer in natural stone, they create spectacular patios where joints fade into the background, allowing large slabs to fully highlight the material.

4. Which thickness should I choose?

The real issue: adapt the stone to your project... and to your climate!

Good news: you don't have to worry about frost resistance. The stones we select for a terrace are chosen to be suitable for outdoor use.

The choice of thickness addresses another question: the installation method, desired durability, and your budget.

LESS THAN 2 CM

A solution especially common in temperate regions

Slabs measuring 1 to 1.5 cm are designed for bonded installation on concrete slabs. Very
common in the South of France, we generally recommend thicknesses of 2 or 3 cm in colder regions (Brittany, Île-de-France, Grand Est...).

Thicker, they withstand temperature variations better throughout the seasons and offer greater durability.

2 cm

A great compromise

The 2 cm option offers an excellent balance between thinness and robustness. Designed for adhesive installation on concrete slabs, it handles temperature variations better than thinner paving while remaining lighter than a 3 cm slab.

Depending on the stone, this thickness is not always available: some products only come in 1.2 cm or directly in 3 cm to meet the most common uses.

3 cm

Two installation methods, one thickness

The 3 cm can be installed both glued to a concrete slab and on sand or crushed aggregate. This thickness offers the most versatility and adapts to the majority of projects.

If you can do more, you can do less: while 2 cm already offers better longevity than thinner paving, 3 cm goes even further. Being thicker, it better withstands temperature variations throughout the seasons and is the preferred choice when seeking the most durable solution.

VARIABLE THICKNESS

For natural relief stones

Some stones naturally have variable thicknesses (2 to 4 cm, 2.5 to 3.5 cm...). These are generally flagstones with more natural finishes, where the stone retains all its irregularities and character.

During installation, these differences in thickness are compensated for from below. Once the patio is finished, the surface remains perfectly flat, while the stone retains its relief, texture, and authentic appearance.
