How to maintain indoor natural stone tiles?

Natural stone tiles, whether marble, slate, or travertine, add a touch of elegance and authenticity to your spaces. To preserve their beauty over the years, it's important to maintain them correctly. Here are our tips for caring for your natural stone tiles.

1. Gentle and regular cleaning

Natural stone is sensitive to harsh chemicals. For daily maintenance, use lukewarm water with a mild soap, such as black soap or Marseille soap. A damp mop or a microfiber broom is usually sufficient to remove dirt without damaging the stone. Avoid abrasive or acidic cleaners, like vinegar, which could damage the surface.

2. Protect against stains

Natural stone is porous and can easily absorb liquids, potentially leaving permanent stains. To prevent this, it's recommended to apply a water-repellent treatment once or twice a year, depending on the type of stone. This treatment waterproofs the surface while preserving its natural appearance. It acts as a protective barrier against water, oils, and other substances that could penetrate the stone.

3. Act quickly in case of stains

Despite protection, it's essential to react quickly if a stain forms. Use a soft cloth to absorb liquids immediately. For more stubborn stains, a mixture of baking soda and lukewarm water can be effective. Apply it gently, let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse with clear water.

4. Preserve the shine

Over time, some stones may lose their luster. To revive the shine of your tiles, you can use specific products for natural stone or call a professional for polishing. This will restore the original shine while eliminating micro-scratches.

5. Take care of the grout

The grout of your natural stone tiles also requires special attention. Clean them regularly with a soft brush and soapy water. If the grout starts to deteriorate, don't hesitate to redo it to prevent moisture from seeping in.
