Each natural stone has its own characteristics, both in terms of aesthetics and technical performance. Travertine offers a warm, rustic style with very natural beige shades, perfect for traditional or Mediterranean interiors. Limestone, visually softer, comes in light, understated tones, ideal for a clean, bright atmosphere. Skirting boards in blue stone or slate give a more contemporary look, with dark colours that contrast elegantly with light tiles or slabs.

The differences also lie in the finish: some stones are offered in a honed finish, others sandblasted, brushed or aged, depending on the effect sought on the wall. Stones such as granite or basalt, which are denser, are particularly wear-resistant and fit well into technical or high-traffic projects.

The classic mistake: choosing a polished skirting board in a high-traffic corridor: they are too slippery and scratch easily. At Minéral, we recommend opting instead for an aged, honed or sandblasted-brushed finish.

The choice therefore depends on the use (indoor or outdoor), the style of the room, the surface to be covered and the desired result.

Unlike ceramic, natural stone ages better on skirting boards. A stone skirting board, even scratched, keeps its character.

The price of natural stone skirting boards depends on the type of stone, the finish, the length and the thickness of the product. At Minéral, a travertine skirting board with an aged finish is available from 6€ per piece, which makes it an economical solution for renovation or interior design projects.

Skirting boards in limestone generally fall within a range of 7 to 15 € per piece, with standard formats such as 40.6 x 8 x 1.2 cm or 60 x 8 x 1 cm.

It is often thought that natural stone is more expensive than industrial ceramic. In reality, on many projects, particularly in our travertine or granite ranges, stone skirting sometimes works out 15 to 30% cheaper than its tile equivalent.

On the projects we support, we often see customers mixing floor tiles and natural stone skirting boards for aesthetic but also budgetary reasons.

A customer in Dijon was able to finish their entire ground floor with travertine skirting boards at less than 9€ each, with a high-end result in total harmony with their stone-effect tiles.

It is therefore not unusual to see tiled floors combined with stone skirting boards, for aesthetic but also economic reasons. Good advice if you are looking for a quality/price compromise without sacrificing the harmony of the project.

Good news: no need to get out your tape measure! To quickly estimate the quantity of skirting boards needed for your project, use this simple rule:

👉 Length of skirting to allow for = Flooring area (in m²) x 0.8

In other words, subtract 20% from the area in m² of your floor to get a realistic estimate in linear metres.

This calculation includes standard wall lengths, cuts, and small adjustments around windows or room corners.

Example: For 50 m² of flooring, allow approximately 40 lm of skirting boards.

Pro tip: if your room has many cuts, returns or technical areas, add 5 to 10% margin to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
