All you need to know about natural stone pool coping

Much more than a simple decorative element, the Minéral Pierre Naturelle pool copingis a key element in your pool design. It offers considerable advantages. Its thickness, ranging from 3 to 8 cm, is greater than that of classic pool coping, allowing for a unique and harmonious stone edge. The stone is worked to achieve a high-end and unparalleled finish. Classic, thinner copings can have an ordinary and standardized finish and cut.

Furthermore, the pool paving can also be made from the same material (travertine, basalt) as the coping, to harmonize your entire outdoor space.

It is an edge or a border that surrounds an in-ground or excavated pool. It marks the perimeter of the basin. As the finishing touch to the basin's landscaping, this finish enhances the pool. It turns your outdoor space into a pleasant and functional place to relax.

In addition to its aesthetic function, it makes it easier to move around the basin. A natural stone pool coping is naturally non-slip, which considerably reduces the risk of falls or slips.

Slightly raised and sloped, it also helps limit the presence of foreign elements in the basin (insects, leaves…) and preserve the cleanliness and quality of the water.

Different types of rock can be used; the choice is varied. They are selected according to their resistance to weathering, durability and appearance. The following stones are notably offered by Minéral Pierre Naturelle.

Travertine : a limestone rock, the travertine comes in a variety of color shades, including beige, white, brown or silver grey. Very solid, it can be used to make natural stone pool coping.

Granite : a very resistant rock, it is a durable material suited to an outdoor environment. granite comes in different colors and patterns.

Limestone : a sedimentary rock, it also comes in different shades. It is particularly popular for outdoor and indoor landscaping. Very widespread, it is particularly used to build Mediterranean-style pools.

Basalt : a volcanic rock, it offers great durability and strength. Black or grey, it can also be used as natural stone pool coping. Dark in color, it offers an interesting color contrast with the rest of the pool and the outdoor landscaping.

Slate : dark in color with silvery reflections, it is a timeless product. Slate keeps its dark color over time.

This type of pool edging is particularly hard-wearing. It withstands the weather (exposure to the sun, temperature changes, rain, frost), as well as chlorinated water and salt. It is therefore a durable and environmentally friendly material.

It is easy to maintain. To clean it, periodic cleaning with a water jet and a stiff broom is sufficient. In addition, it resists stains and does not scratch.

A natural stone pool coping stores heat very slowly, retains it and then releases it gradually. Exposed to the sun, this type of floor does not become scorching hot. It is therefore perfectly suited to outdoor use.

Wooden pool copings can also be installed. However, they require more maintenance, as they deteriorate quickly when exposed to rain and sun. They must therefore be maintained regularly. Their maximum lifespan is then 20 years, which is not the case for a natural stone pool coping, which is much more resistant and requires little maintenance.

It is also possible to have concrete copings installed. Unlike stone, their appearance can deteriorate over time (change in colour, fading surface treatment, cracks…). This material is prone to the growth of algae and moss. Regular maintenance is therefore necessary. The long-term maintenance cost is therefore high.

There are also porcelain stoneware copings or ceramic copings, which are resistant and easy to maintain. However, they are thinner, with a thickness of 2 cm, unlike natural stone. In addition, they do not have the same colour on the top as on the side.

👉 At Minéral, we have chosen to offer only natural stone pool copings, to guarantee durability, beauty and authenticity.

The use of stripping agents, acids (lemon juice or vinegar) or corrosive products is not recommended, especially on limestone.

For particularly dirty borders and edges, the product Lithofin Multi-Cleaner can be used.

To dissolve stubborn dirt and organic stains (algae, lichen, tannin), the product Lithofin Exterior Cleaner is also recommended. Diluted with water, it cleans deeply.
