Collection: Wall coping and caps

Our collection of natural stone wall coping, also known as capping stones, is designed to provide long-lasting protection for your walls and low walls against water infiltration while adding a neat finish to your outdoor spaces. Some models have drip edges to facilitate water drainage, while others do not, depending on requirements and uses.

All about natural stone coping

Given the numerous types of wall copings, it's not always easy to choose from the wide range of materials, shapes, finishes, and the specific characteristics of each material. What is a coping stone really used for? Are these accessories essential? Here, we help you select the product that best suits your decor while respecting your budget.

A wall top, also called in some regions: flat wall coping, capstone, or wall cap, is a protective and waterproofing element. These accessories are placed on top of a wall, a low wall, a fence or a flat roof.

A good wall coping serves several functions:

  • Ensure watertightness of your wall / low wall.
  • Protect your wall from infiltrations, damp problems, but also from deterioration caused by weather conditions (snow, frost, hail, rain…) and from natural wear (caused by the proliferation of plants and insects).
  • Maintain energy efficiency of the low wall while allowing good insulation.
  • Prevent rainwater run-off along the low wall, which causes dirt and/or whitish discoloration of your walls.
  • Promote good aging of a wall.
  • Play an aesthetic role. It gives the wall a smooth and neat appearance while concealing the mortar or irregular surfaces of the formwork.

Generally, stone wall copings are flat and have a rectangular shape. The standard formats are usually 60 cm or 1 meter long. Some products are also available in random lengths (coping stones of varying lengths from 50 to 80 cm), giving a very attractive look.

The thicknesses vary depending on the product, they are generally offered in 4 cm thickness, or in some cases 3 cm.

You can also order custom pieces that we make to measure in our marble workshop. We can thus make cuts to the size of your choice, perfectly suited to your wall. They can have a rounded look, flat, or come as corner pieces or wall coping. Custom copings can also be made in other materials such as Burgundy stone or even ceramic.

The finish of a flat wall coping depends on the type of natural stone selected. Some rocks hold up better over time with a rather rough finish, while others will look more refined with a smooth finish. Among the many possible finishes, we always select the most appropriate finishes for each material. The aim is to achieve excellent durability combined with an incomparable aesthetic result.

Wall copings always have a worked upper face in a specific finish (flamed, aged, sawn…). The sides are bevelled and given a honed or polished finish, for a more attractive result.

The most common finish remains the flamed finish, which mainly applies to granite wall tops. The aged finish, more rustic, works rather well with beige limestones such as Burgundy stone. It is also common to see other finishes suited to outdoor installation such as: sandblasted, brushed, or sawn.

Natural stone, the durable and timeless protective material par excellence, lets you create a wide range of wall copings by playing with finishes, colour, material and product sizes. Choosing stone means ensuring a product with unrivalled durability and an incomparable natural look. Natural stone beautifully enhances garden walls and lets you carry out complete projects in the same material as your wall or outdoor floor (paving, cladding strips, stair treads etc.).

Natural stone wall copings suit a more traditional decor (Burgundy stone in an aged finish, for example) just as well as a more contemporary outdoor space (in light grey granite, blue stone or basalt for example).

The width of your wall copings will depend above all on the width of your wall.

All our wall coping models include 2 drip edges (also called a drip groove), each located lengthwise at approximately 1.5 cm from the edges. To ensure proper water runoff and avoid any possible damage, it is important that these drip edges are not in contact with the wall.

You must therefore always allow an additional margin relative to the size of your low wall, so that the drip edges project beyond each side.

For each face of the wall, allow a minimum overhang of 2.5 cm, i.e. a total of about 5 cm more than the total width of your wall (wall covering included: cladding, paint, bricks...).

For example, for a low wall rendered on 2 sides and 25 cm wide: start with copings 30 cm wide. On the other hand, if cladding stone 2.5 cm thick is glued to each face of a 25 cm wide wall, opt instead for a 35 cm wide wall coping.

At Minéral, the wall coping models we keep in stock are available in widths ranging between 25 / 30 / 35 or 40 cm.

The price of a flat wall coping or capping depends on the model, its dimensions, and the types of natural stone chosen. As a general rule, allow between €30 and €90 per piece.

For a tighter budget, opt instead for smaller formats, such as basalt copings of 60 cm in length, or lesser thickness (3 cm for example).

For technical pieces custom-made to measure, the price will necessarily be higher. Allow for example €50 to €70 for a flat Burgundy stone wall coping 40 x 40 x 3 cm with a drip groove.

If you are looking for a wall coping of a very specific shape (flat, curved or with particular details), the price of these products will also be higher than average. For example, for a corner coping 4 cm thick, allow around €60 per linear meter.

As a general rule, wall copings are sealed using a flexible adhesive mortar specially designed for natural stone.

To make the joints between each natural stone wall coping, prefer a floor / wall grout for outdoor use, suited to natural stone. These sand and flexible cement-based grouts withstand expansion better. You will find these products in our accessories tab.

Wall copings can either be cut on site using a circular saw, or pre-cut in our workshops to precise dimensions.
