Kuru Dark granite terrace and pool copings in Obernai

The project

At a 1990s house in Obernai, the owners had just had a pool dug. They wanted a dark, contemporary terrace around it that would not be slippery underfoot and would cope with Alsatian winters.

The choices

After seeing Kuru Dark laid in the outdoor display at our Bischheim store, they chose the paving in 60 × 60 cm and copings in the same granite.

Kuru Dark granite is a dense, low-porosity stone: it withstands frost, de-icing salt and stains, which makes it a safe choice for outdoor areas exposed to harsh winters. Textured finishes such as flamed keep the surface slip-resistant, even when wet.

The copings can be chosen in the same stone as the paving, for a seamless colour between the pool deck and the pool. Corner pieces, curves or special lengths can be made to measure in our workshop.

Installation

Installation was carried out by a local landscaper on a concrete slab in just over two weeks. The materials were delivered to the site in one go.

For a long-lasting terrace, the paving is laid on a stable, well-drained base with a fall of about 1.5 to 2 % to shed water, using an adhesive and grout designed for outdoor use and natural stone. Our in-store advisers can recommend the right installation products.

Copings are laid on top of the pool wall with a slight overhang above the water and a gentle fall away from the pool, so that rainwater does not run back into it. Joints are made with a product compatible with treated pool water.

The result

About 85 m² of terrace and 26 metres of copings form a consistent whole around the pool. The dark grey shade sets off the pool water.

Granite needs little maintenance: regular cleaning with water, plus a suitable cleaner when needed, is enough in most cases. A water-repellent treatment can reduce soiling.
