Silversand granite pool surround with bluestone copings in Saarbrücken

The project

In Saarbrücken, the owners of a house with a garden were having a pool built. They wanted a light, frost-resistant surround and copings that outline the pool.

The choices

They chose Silversand granite paving for the surround and Ocean Blue bluestone copings, whose grey-blue tone highlights the pool.

Silversand granite is a dense, low-porosity rock: it resists frost, de-icing salts and stains, making it a safe choice for outdoor areas exposed to harsh winters. Textured finishes such as flamed stay slip-resistant even when wet.

The Ocean Blue coping is a dense limestone with grey-blue shades. Its aged finish reduces the risk of slipping, its rounded edge is comfortable to the touch, and its drip edges direct water away from the pool walls. Corner pieces, curves or special lengths can be made to measure in our workshop.

Installation

A partner pool builder laid the copings and the surround in about two weeks, following construction of the pool.

Copings are laid on the pool wall with a slight overhang above the water and a gentle slope outwards, so rainwater does not run back into the pool. Joints are made with a product compatible with treated water.

For a durable terrace, paving is laid on a stable, free-draining base with a fall of about 1.5 to 2% to drain water, using an adhesive and grout designed for outdoor use and natural stone. Our in-store advisers can recommend the right installation products.

The result

About 45 m² of light grey surround and 26 metres of grey-blue copings framing the pool.

Granite needs little maintenance: regular cleaning with water, with a suitable cleaner if needed, is enough in most cases. Bluestone, being a limestone, is cleaned with pH-neutral products; a water-repellent treatment can limit soiling.
