ALL ABOUT BLACK GRAVEL

Black gravel is a natural decorative material highly
prized for outdoor landscaping. It comes in crushed gravel and pebbles, suitable for mulching, driveways, or bed decoration. Our experts explain how to choose, install, and maintain this durable and aesthetic product.

Black gravel is generally a crushed gravel made from natural stones such as basalt, slate or granite. Among our flagship products are Crushed gravel NOIR EBANO, renowned for its superior quality, as well as Crushed gravel NOIR DES ARDENNES and black slate mulch.

This decorative material is widely used outdoors for:

  • Mulching of flower beds and borders, which limits weed growth while retaining soil moisture.
  • Creating pedestrian paths or stabilised areas, thanks to its suitable grain size.
  • Decoration around trees, wood or natural stone borders, creating an elegant contrast, particularly with white pebbles.
  • Filling courtyards or outdoor spaces for an attractive, natural look.

Black gravel blends perfectly into modern landscaping projects, bringing sobriety and depth thanks to its intense black colour. Its use in construction also helps stabilise certain soils or ground.

At Minéral, we support every customer with a complete service: personalised advice, detailed installation guides, fast delivery options (from the 25 kg bag to the 1 m³ big bag), and in-store pickup (click & collect). Our after-sales service is also available to answer any technical or logistical question.

To choose your black gravel well, several important criteria must be taken into account:

  • Grain size and shape: Crushed gravel offers better stability, ideal for paths or traffic areas. Pebbles, being rounder, are more decorative and used for flower beds or interior decoration.
  • Type of material: Black basalt is very resistant and natural, ideal for durable outdoor use. Black slate is more aesthetic for decorative mulching, and crushed stones offer good grip on the ground.
  • Packaging: Depending on the area to be covered, you can opt for bags (practical for small projects) or big bags for large volumes. The choice also affects the price and ease of delivery.
  • Quality and stock: Make sure the chosen product is in stock for fast delivery. Minéral offers natural materials, selected for their quality and homogeneity.

Our experts also advise you to take into account the necessary accessories such as geotextiles for a durable installation and to prevent weeds.

Our company Minéral has several decades of experience and processes several thousand tonnes of black gravel per year. We ensure strict quality control by regularly visiting our partner quarries. (see page)

The installation of black gravel requires a few key steps to ensure an attractive and durable result:

  • Soil preparation: Clean the surface, remove roots, debris and weeds. Install a drainage layer (gravel or crushed sand) if needed to prevent standing water.
  • Laying a geotextile: This permeable fabric prevents weed growth while letting water through, which is essential for the longevity of your landscaping.
  • Spreading the gravel: Spread the black gravel in an even layer, generally 3 to 5 cm thick depending on use (mulching, path, planting bed).
  • Stabilization: For driveable paths, it is recommended to add a stabilizer or to lay the gravel on a compacted bed.

Regarding maintenance, regular cleaning with a blower or a soft broom is enough to remove leaves and dust. To fight moss, use products suited to natural stones. Pressure washing can be used occasionally, but with caution.

Our experts provide you with precise installation guides and a wide choice of suitable maintenance products to guarantee the longevity and appearance of your black gravel.

Black gravel has several major advantages:

  • Aesthetics: Its deep color blends with many materials and creates elegant contrasts.
  • Durability: Weather-resistant, crushed gravel does not break down and keeps its qualities over time.
  • Easy maintenance: It requires little upkeep, especially when laid on geotextile.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of projects, from decoration to pedestrian paths.

As for the budget, the price varies according to grain size, the nature of the product, the packaging and the quantity ordered. For example, the crushed gravel NOIR EBANO is available in a 25 kg bag for small projects at a price of €10.50 or in a 1 m³ big bag at a price of €435 for large sites, with excellent value for money.

At Minéral, we offer a permanent stock of black gravel in different grain sizes and packagings, with a fast delivery or click & collect service, depending on your needs.
