A granite paver is a piece cut from a very hard igneous rock, used for outdoor paving. Renowned for its strength, its frost resistance, and its longevity, granite is an excellent choice for paths, terraces, gardens, or vehicle-accessible areas. It offers a traditional or contemporary style depending on the finish chosen.

The granite pavers are available in several sizes, thicknesses and colours (grey, black, beige, pink…), with cleft or sawn edges, and a flamed or natural surface.

Granite is one of the best materials for an outdoor floor covering. It offers several advantages:

  • Excellent wear resistance (suitable for areas with intense traffic, heavy vehicles, etc.)
  • Low porosity, and therefore little sensitivity to stains
  • Easy maintenance compared to other natural stones (sandstone, travertine, limestone)
  • Timeless aesthetics, for a noble and natural look

The thickness depends on the use:

  • 3 to 5 cm: for pedestrian areas (terrace, garden path)
  • 6 to 8 cm: for light vehicle areas (car, van)
  • 10 cm and more: for heavy goods vehicles or urban roads

The choice of granite type and its treatment also influence resistance to traffic.

Here are the key steps:

  1. Excavating of the ground according to the expected load
  2. Laying a stable sub-base (hardcore or gravel)
  3. Adding a geotextile to limit vegetation regrowth
  4. Levelling the bedding layer of crushed sand (3 to 5 cm)
  5. Laying the pavers while respecting the joints
  6. Filling the joints with sand or mortar depending on the desired finish


Don't forget to provide good drainage and a slope of at least 2%.
