A dry stone wall is a structure built dry (without mortar, without cement), solely by the manual fitting together of natural stones. This method relies on the art of fitting rubble stones or stone blocks to ensure the stability of the wall.
It is used to build garden walls, retaining walls, agricultural terraces, or even cladding of built heritage.

Dry stone is appreciated for its durability, its natural landscape integration, and its respect for the environment: it lets water and biodiversity circulate. Very widespread in Burgundy, in the Yonne, in the South of France, and in rural areas, it is making a comeback today in outdoor landscaping and ecological renovation projects.

To build a dry stone wall in a garden, mainly natural stones such as limestone, gneiss, slate or sandstone are used. These materials offer good resistance to bad weather.

A dry stone wall offers several advantages over a mortared wall:

Building a dry-stone wall requires few tools:

  • Club hammer and chisel to adjust the stones, if needed
  • Spirit level to check that it is plumb,
  • Builder's line for alignment,
  • Trowel or pick if laying with a grout joint or additional masonry.

The essential thing is patience, precision, and a good eye for fitting the elements together naturally.

A dry-stone retaining wall is built without binder, thanks to a precise fitting together of the stones.

First, a stable foundation of gravel or crushed stone must be prepared. The largest stones are laid at the base, and the wall is built up by staggering the joints, with a slight batter (slope) towards the back. The gaps are filled with strips and a drain is added to avoid water pressure. This type of structure follows the principles of traditional dry-stone masonry.

The format depends on the style you want: fitted opus, irregular cladding or coursed. Limestone is easy to work and fits perfectly into landscaped areas or built heritage. These blocks are often found on pallets, ready to use for garden work.
