Travertine is a natural limestone formed by sedimentation, often quarried in Italy or Turkey. It is a noble material that has stood the test of centuries, recognizable by its porous appearance and its warm shades ranging from light beige to dark hazelnut, with light or silver variants.

People choose travertine tiles for their visual warmth, their authentic character and their rustic effect, much appreciated in Mediterranean or Provençal decors. Unlike industrial tiles, each travertine slab has a unique appearance, with veins, cavities and irregularities that create an inimitable natural charm.

It adapts to every room of the house, both indoors and outdoors, and suits modern styles as well as traditional atmospheres. In addition, it is a durable material that holds up well over time when properly maintained.

The travertine tile is a versatile covering. It is suitable for most rooms in your home and your outdoor areas.

Indoors, it is ideal in an entrance, a living room, a kitchen, or a bathroom. Thanks to its non-slip properties when aged or brushed, it is also suitable for wet areas such as walk-in showers or bath surrounds.

Outdoors, travertine is often used for terraces, pool surrounds, steps, or garden paths. It is naturally frost-resistant, especially when laid with a suitable thickness and water-repellent treated.

This natural stone tile is therefore perfectly suited to creating a visual harmony between your indoor and outdoor spaces. The beige travertine, for example, blends into any environment, while adding character and a very trendy mineral touch.

At Minéral, our product experts support private customers and professionals in adapting travertine to the technical constraints of each project, indoor or outdoor.

The travertine tiles come in different finishes, each influencing both the appearance and the use of the material. The aged finish creates an old, patinated style, with irregular edges, ideal for rustic or Mediterranean atmospheres. The honed finish has a smooth, slightly satin surface, perfect for modern interiors. Filled travertine is a travertine whose natural cavities have been filled with resin or a stone-colored mortar, offering a more uniform look. There are also slabs in raw travertine, kept in their natural state, generally intended for decorative or outdoor use. Each type of finish is offered in several shades (classic, light, silver…) and can be matched with various formats. Whether for a bathroom floor, a terrace, or a kitchen, we offer in stock the finishes corresponding to every need.

Travertine tiling comes in a wide range of formats, suitable for all types of use. The most popular remains the Roman opus IV format, made up of four different dimensions: 61x40.6 cm, 40.6x40.6 cm, 40.6x20.3 cm and 20.3x20.3 cm. This mixed format creates a very attractive irregular pattern, perfect for a natural and traditional look. We also offer rectangular formats such as the 61x40.6 cm, easy to install, or the 61x61 cm for a more modern style. Depending on the collections, the thickness varies from 1.2 cm (for indoor use) to 3 cm (for vehicle-accessible outdoor use or pedestal installation). The tiles are suitable for living areas as well as for a bathroom or a terrace. In addition to natural travertine, we also offer travertine-look porcelain stoneware in the same formats. All our products are available in stock, ready to be delivered or collected.

The price of travertine tiles depends on several factors: the quality of the stone, its finish, the format, the thickness, as well as the place of production. Here are a few examples from our current range:

We also offer travertine-effect porcelain stoneware at attractive prices, ideal for projects with a tighter budget. All our tiles are available in stock, with the option of fast delivery. Our prices are net, expressed per square meter, and we also offer a range of matching accessories: skirting boards, pool coping.

Travertine offers many advantages that make it a very popular choice in decoration :

  • Unique aesthetics: thanks to its beige shades, natural veining and its look, whether aged or honed.
  • Versatility: it adapts to every room of the house, from the living room to the bathroom, and even outdoors.
  • Durability: this stone withstands wear very well and retains its shine over time.
  • Comfort: pleasant to the touch, it is compatible with underfloor heating.
  • Added value: it is a noble material that adds value to your home.

But like any natural stone, travertine also has some disadvantages :

  • Porous: a water-repellent treatment is necessary to protect it from stains.
  • Specific installation: it requires know-how and the use of stone-compatible products.
  • Slightly higher price than that of basic ceramic tiles.

Installing travertine tiles requires certain precautions to ensure a durable result. Indoors, bonded installation is recommended, with a special natural stone adhesive, preferably white to avoid any staining of the stone. Outdoors, we recommend a mortar-bedded installation (on screed) or a bonded installation with double buttering, if the substrate is stable. Opus formats require particular attention to properly respect the modules. It is important to provide flexible joints, at least 5 mm wide, or even a little more outdoors. Use a travertine-compatible grout, without pigments that could stain the surface. Once the installation is finished, remember to apply a water- and oil-repellent treatment. Our experts are at your disposal to help you choose the most suitable accessories and installation products.

As travertine is a naturally porous stone, it requires proper treatment to ensure its durability and its stain resistance. After installation, apply a water-repellent/stain-proof sealer specially designed for natural stone. This treatment forms an invisible barrier preventing water, oil or wine from penetrating. It is advisable to reapply it every 3 to 5 years, depending on use. For routine maintenance, favor a mild cleaning product (such as black soap or Lithofin Wash & Clean), free of acid, suitable for natural stone. Absolutely avoid aggressive cleaners or limescale removers, which could damage the surface. For ingrained stains, mild stain removers are available. Aged-effect travertine is more tolerant, as its irregularities hide minor dirt better. Well-executed regular maintenance will give your travertine surface a lasting shine, whether in a bathroom, a living space or on a terrace.

For those who want a travertine-effect tile without the constraints of natural stone, travertine-look porcelain stoneware is an interesting alternative. It reproduces the aesthetics of travertine with its beige shades, its veining effects, and its varied formats, rectangular or opus. Easy to install, it requires no special treatment and offers excellent resistance to chemicals, frost and moisture. We offer several series in stock: Travertine LIGHT porcelain stoneware, Travertine RUSTIC and Travertine DARK. Their price per m² is very competitive, which makes it possible to carry out large-scale projects (large rooms, rental housing, commercial premises). For a modern bathroom, a family kitchen or a maintenance-free terrace, porcelain stoneware is a reassuring product that faithfully imitates natural travertine.
